Are you trying to quit smoking? You've thought about it time and time again. You've probably even tried and it just never worked out for you. The truth of the matter is you're not the only one who has tried and failed. But then again, others didn't have all the tools that could help them quit smoking and stay smoke free for life.
Smoking Statistics
Despite what smokers often say about the joys of smoking, it is estimated that among the 50 million adult U.S.smokers, 8 out of 10 want to quit. Each year,
over 17 million will actually try to quit and they have good reasons:
- The Surgeon General has repeatedly issued warnings concerning the
dangerous health consequences of smoking.
- Deaths related to smoking number over 450,000 per year,
representing the #1 avoidable cause of death in our county. That
means 1,233 people die every day from smoking-related diseases.
That equals four jumbo jets full of people crashing with no
survivors, every single day!
- Thomas Novotny, epidemiologist for the Centers for Disease Control
says, "One-fifth of all deaths in this country are attributable to
smoking, it's as if each year, the cities of Atlanta, Oklahoma City, St.
Louis or Kansas City were eliminated through the use of tobacco."
- Smoking costs our society over $30 billion dollars per year in health
care and productivity loss.
- The poisons in cigarettes include nicotine, tars, carbon monoxide,
hydrogen cyanide, aldehydes and nitro-genoxide. One quarter of the
nicotine you inhale reaches your brain in just 7 seconds.
- Cigarettes are a major cause of lung cancer, heart disease, chronic
bronchitis and emphysema. According to the American Heart
Association, if you smoke one pack of cigarettes a day, you more
than double your risk of a heart attack. If you smoke more than one
pack per day, you are tripling your risk.
- As many as four out of every ten smokers will die as a result
of smoking.
- Women who smoke while pregnant have a higher incidence of giving
birth to stillborn or underweight babies.
- New information proves that inhaling secondhand or side-stream
smoke poses a health risk to nonsmokers, especially to infants and
young children. In fact, passive smoking (nonsmokers breathing the
harmful fumes from being near someone who is smoking) is now
among the top five causes of death and is designated by the EPA to
be a Type "A" carcinogen.
- "Cigarette Smoking Causes Wrinkles, Study Confirms", was the title
of a Wall Street Journal article. The article went on to state,
"Cigarette smoking does, in fact, cause premature facial wrinkles, a
University of Utah study confirmed...the Utah researchers found
that heavy cigarette smokers were 3.5 times more likely than
nonsmokers to have severe "crows feet" wrinkling around the eyes."
- According to the California Department of Health Services,
tobacco companies are the fourth largest lobby in the state
and the largest out-of-state source of political funds. They will spend
$300 million this year on advertising and merchandising activities in
California alone, and $300 million next year and so on. (Nothing
personal, it's just business.)
- In the United States, there have been a total of 15 deaths related to
asbestos and our country spends over $5 billion a year to remove
asbestos from our buildings. Compare that to the fact that there are
over 450,000 smoking-related deaths in this country every year, and
our government still continues to subsidize the tobacco industry with
millions and millions of dollars.

Despite all of these medical risks as well as the pressures and
legislative efforts aimed at eliminating smoking from our society, many
people continue to smoke. This is because nicotine is a powerful drug
that causes a tremendous physical addiction. In addition, smokers
develop a strong psychological addiction to smoking. Like any other
addiction, there are two aspects of dependence. While overcoming the
physical addiction to nicotine takes only a short time, overcoming the
psychological addiction to smoking and preventing relapse is a much
longer process.
According to an Adult Use of Tobacco Study, most smokers used the
"cold turkey" approach to stop smoking. However, anyone who has
tried this approach will know that there are strong behavioral reasons
why "cold turkey" and other previous methods to stop have failed.
Those smokers who fall back into smoking again and again do it
because they have not learned the right behavior to stay smoke-free.
The CigArrest Program was developed to help you stop smoking, and
more importantly, to prevent relapse and help you stay smoke-free for
life. The program has already helped over 4 million people.
